Grief is one of the most human experiences we can have, yet it is often deeply misunderstood. While many people associate grief with death, it can also emerge after breakups, divorce, estrangement, chronic illness, identity shifts, infertility, betrayal, immigration, or any meaningful loss that changes the shape of your life. At Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy, we offer compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive grief therapy in Atlanta and virtually throughout Georgia to support adults navigating loss in all its forms — without pressure to rush, or “move on” before they are ready.

What Does Grief Actually feel like?

Grief rarely moves in a straight line.

Some days it may feel heavy and obvious. Other days it may feel distant, confusing, or invisible. You may find yourself crying unexpectedly, feeling emotionally shut down, struggling to concentrate, or questioning who you are now that something important has changed.

Grief can impact:

  • your nervous system

  • your relationships

  • your sleep

  • your appetite

  • your energy

  • your ability to feel joy

Sometimes grief looks like sadness.

Sometimes it looks like emotional numbness.

Sometimes it looks like anxiety.

And sometimes it looks like simply trying to survive the day.

Our blog on Emotional Numbness: When You Can’t Feel Anything Anymore explores this experience more deeply.

Types of Grief We Support

Grief is not one-size-fits-all.

At ACIP, we support clients navigating many forms of loss, including:

Death & Bereavement

Losing a loved one can profoundly impact your sense of safety, identity, and belonging.

Breakup & Relationship Loss

The end of a relationship can create grief that is often minimized by others but deeply painful. We support clients navigating heartbreak, divorce, betrayal, and attachment rupture.

Anticipatory Grief

Sometimes grief begins before the loss itself — such as caring for a loved one with a terminal illness or watching someone decline.

Ambiguous Loss

Some losses do not have clear endings. Estrangement, addiction, dementia, infertility, or immigration-related separation can create grief without closure.

Identity & Life Transition Grief

Grief can emerge when letting go of who you thought you would be, what you hoped for, or how life was “supposed” to unfold.

Grief therapy is not about “moving on.”

It is about making space for what has changed.

How Therapy Can Help with Grief & Loss

Grief therapy is not about “moving on” or finding a way to leave your loss behind.

It is about making space for what has changed — and for the emotions, questions, and pain that often come with it.

Loss can disrupt your sense of safety, identity, and connection. It can affect how you move through relationships, how you care for yourself, and how you make sense of the future. Sometimes grief feels overwhelming and ever-present. Other times it feels distant, numb, or difficult to access at all.

Therapy can help you:

  • process painful emotions

  • make meaning of your loss

  • navigate relational changes

  • understand how grief impacts your nervous system

  • reduce isolation

  • reconnect with yourself

Healing does not mean forgetting.

It does not mean the loss mattered less.

It means learning how to carry the loss differently.
